DYEING MAGIC

Almost every photograph of Rajasthan is characterised by the riot of colours typical to the garments of the Rajasthani people. This trail explores Rajasthan’s traditional dyeing techniques – leheriya, meaning waves, and bandhini, meaning knots, which together create the distinct Rajasthani attire.

We meet traditional dyers and contemporary designers who insist on using only organic dyes made from indigo, tamarind, pomegranate, harda etc. We walk through the narrow lanes of the old city to participate in an exclusive workshop on the process by an award-winning artisan.

After the better part of the day spent in learning this traditional skill, the trail leads us to the authentic merchants of this handicraft to buy from them, giving the usual tourist traps a miss.
